Taza Yerba Mate Chocolate Mexicano - Stone ground and certified Organic. Part of Taza's Chocolate Mexicano series, this is not one bar, but actually two 1.35oz disks made up of notched wedges. Fresh and intriguing fruit and fresh black tea notes. 2.7oz. 50% dark chocolate.
Ingredients: organic roasted cacao beans, organic cane sugar, and organic yerba mate powder.
Yerba mate is a tropical herb and the tea made from it is considered to be the national drink in many South American countries. It contains both theobromine (the mild stimulant also found in chocolate) and caffeine in levels about half of that of coffee. So, you can expect some caffeine in this chocolate. Some of the compounds in Yerba mate are thought to have beneficial health effects. For instance recent research shows that saponins have a stimulating effect on the immune system. Numerous studies have found Yerba Mate to have significant antioxidant activity. One Swiss study found that it also had potential as a weight-loss aid. Note: these statements have not been evaluated by the food and drug administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. This product is meant to be enjoyed!

PLANET POSITIVES:
+ USDA Certified Organic
+ Direct trade with growers ensures fair wages on the farm
+ Direct trade means reduced carbon foot print since there are no intermediary brokers
+ NewLeaf Chocolates is only six miles from the Taza factory, so we can get our inventory by hybrid car or bike, reducing the carbon footprint of the supply chain.
As members of Slow Food USA, they respect the principles of “good, clean and fair” – making chocolate that is good to eat, clean for the environment and fair to farmers. Taza follows a direct trade model where they cut out the intermediary cacao bean brokers and deal directly with the growers. By working directly with farmers, they can provide a premium above fair trade and closely monitor the quality of the beans. Even more, the carbon footprint of the supply chain is reduced when all the extra shipping and handling is cut out along with the “middleman” broker.

PROFILE: Taza Chocolate
Taza makes unique organic bean-to-bar chocolate in the USA. Their hand-made artisan chocolate is stone ground using traditional Mexican stone mills called molinos rather than extensive refining and conching. This method produces a minimally processed chocolate that retains the vivid fruity character of the raw bean. You can expect a truly unique flavor experience – from the rustic, coarse texture to the bright berry notes present in all their bars. Taza enjoys a growing cult following who understand that handmade artisan chocolate can have aesthetic “imperfections” such air bubbles or surface sugar crystals that have no effect on taste. As members of Slow Food USA, they respect the principles of “good, clean and fair” – making chocolate that is good to eat, clean for the environment and fair to farmers.
